Skin Tight

There’s no need for remorse. No need to feel the slightest tinge of guilt for celebrating the early arrival of spring in Tampa Bay. Sure, we all have friends and family suffering through snow drifts, ice storms and blizzards, but that’s not our fault, is it? Seventy five degree days and cloudless skies demand a certain revelry, a glorious basking.

That is, unless the thought of wobbly thighs, bare bellies and swimsuits causes genuine panic. For many, the arrival of warm breezes and spring break is not always a joyous occasion. But getting beach body ready doesn’t necessarily mean a master cleanse and liposuction. Besides... who wants all that anesthesia and down time? We’re talking about investing in alternative weapons of fat destruction.

From Exilis to Zerona, FDA-approved, non-invasive, body shaping techniques are all the rage, but not all fat-blasting wands are created equal. Zerona laser liposuction requires a four-week commitment involving a low-fat diet, one week of special supplements, two weeks of laser treatments and then waiting a week or more to see results.

Zeltiq’s CoolSculpting uses an applicator piece that has a strong vacuum where fat is pinched down and, literally, frozen. The frozen fat cells die and are then expelled naturally, within six weeks to two months after treatment. If it sounds painful, it can be. Treated areas are often sore, tender or bruised; plus, CoolSculpting is not FDA-approved for use on the butt, thighs, arms or neck.

Which leaves Exilis, perhaps the simplest, most effective method for body shaping and reduction of targeted fatty deposits on the body. The Exilis Body Contouring Machine uses radiofrequency energy and vibrations to volumetrically heat deeper tissues and ramp up the metabolic activity of fat cells, causing them to shrink. The thermal energy also boosts the body’s natural ability to produce collagen, so not only will your fat cell volume decrease, but your skin will tighten and become younger-looking, as well.

Exilis safely targets problem areas such as shaping and contouring for flanks (“love handles”), sculpting double chin and neck areas, fine-tuning belly fat and back fat (“bra roll”), as well as significantly tightening skin all over the body. Daytime celebrity host, Kathy Lee Gifford touts the advantages of Exilis. She found her Exilis treatment so effective that she has featured it on her show. Further, the Exilis machine’s amazing results has earned it the MyFaceMyBody award for “Best Skin Tightening Device”.

If you’re interested in nonsurgical alternatives to liposuction, talk with your doctor or med spa professional. In the meantime, don’t abandon healthy eating and exercise. They’re still the best way to eliminate excess body fat long term.

Further, the Exilis machine’s amazing results has earned it the MyFaceMyBody award for “Best Skin Tightening Device,” as well as NewBeauty magazine’s Beauty Choice Award for Best Skin Tightener.

Read My Lips

As far as beauty trends go, plump pouts are here to stay. That’s not to say that thin lips aren’t’t beautiful. Think Meryl Streep or Jodie Foster. However, every time you turn around, some model or actress is showing off her newly “enhanced” kisser. And why shouldn’t’t they? Soft, full lips just seem youthful and healthy, sensuous and sexy.

Here’s the truth: As we get older, collagen and elastin, which give lips their fullness, collapse over time, not only deflating the shape, but increasing lines and wrinkles. Once these lines become etched into the skin, there’s even less definition, less fullness. Thankfully, there are plenty of ways to renew those youthful puckers that Father Time has taken away.

For a fast temporary fix, try any number of lip-plumping products found on the beauty aisle. Typically, these products swell the lips with cinnamon, peppermint or capsaicin, increasing blood flow to the lips, giving them a plump appearance. While this may work to increase the volume and softness of your lips, the result is short-lived. Most of the effects will wear off in about an hour.

Permanent makeup, or tattooing, is a tactic used to outline and color the lips, giving the illusion of fuller lips — much like expertly applied lip liner. Again, this is a temporary fix and it does fade over time.

Of course, if you’re looking for something longer lasting, than it’s time to consider fillers. To recreate a youthful, heart-shaped outline, Botox, used off-label, can be injected along the edges of the upper and lower lip line, temporarily relaxing the muscles that can cause wrinkling. The procedure requires no anesthesia and takes mere minutes. Patients report fuller lips for up to 4 months.

To further enhance the contours of a thin, wrinkled lip line, your dermatologist or med spa professional may also suggest a hyaluronic acid filler like Restylane® or Juvederm® for increased volume. The results are visible immediately. Fullness can last up to a year, depending on which product is used.

“It is extremely important for patients to find a qualified, injection artist with considerable experience in the procedure. Poorly done lip enhancements rightly earn the infamous name “trout-pout.” says Dana Martinez, owner of Lecada Medical Artistry. Which is why Martinez encourages a “less-is-more” approach. “Most skilled injection artists are conservative with the amount of filler used in the first injection. The results should look good, but not disproportionate, so a second injection is typically needed to achieve the best, most natural outcome.”

Martinez also remarked that many men and women are under the wrong impression that once the use of hyalouronic or collagen-based injectables ends, his or her lips will deflate or sag as the filler wears off. “This is, simply, not true,” she says. ”As fillers gradually disappear, lip volume returns to its original size, but no less full than it began.”

Holiday Beauty Blitz

The countdown to the ho-ho-holidays has officially begun. In the run up to the big day(s), make sure you’re fully prepared with a pre-holiday beauty blitz that will not only ramp up the glow factor in your holiday photos, but have you feeling ultra-healthy going into the busiest time of the year.

Because the holidays are a busy time, many women don’t pay as close attention to their skin. That, coupled with bad habits, is a surefire way to get unexpected breakouts. Advanced planning is the key to keeping your skin on track! Reboot your skin with a light and flaky enzyme peel in early November, or a deep-cleansing facial and microdermabrasion around Thanksgiving to reboot your skin and clear out your pores.

Alcohol, salty foods and holiday parties may be fun, but they wreak havoc on your skin, making everything seem puffier than usual, especially the eyes. To deflate, flush your body with anti-inflammatory foods — think fruits, vegetables, salmon and un-salted nuts — and drink plenty of water. And be diligent about applying a serum like Revision Skincare’s Retinol Eye Repair or a moisturizer like Teamine Eye Complex, both of which are loaded with skin-plumping antioxidants and much-needed hydration. Finally, to help prevent fluid retention in the eye area, try to sleep with your head slightly elevated

If you haven’t quite reached your target tone in time to don that gorgeous sequin party dress, why not supplement your exercise regime with a last minute body sculpting treatment? Exilis’s targeted fat reduction and skin tightening treatment can help you tighten and tone, shed a few inches off your key areas and reduce the appearance of stubborn fat.

Though wrinkles are primarily caused by age and sun damage, other factors make them more noticeable like stress, drinking and sweets. Of course, drinking plenty of water and clean eating is the first step to rehydrate your skin and lessen the appearance of wrinkles, but sometimes our best intentions go awry. Never underestimate the power of Botox to turn those frown lines upside down! Botox smooths away lines, crow’s feet, even stubborn mid-brow furrows to create a smoother, more relaxed look almost instantly. Coupled with fillers like Juvederm and Radiesse, you can restore your youthful complexion in minutes. As a bonus, dermal fillers trigger your body to create more of its own natural collagen, so each subsequent treatment has an additive effect to slow the steady march of time.

For a final body-beautiful prep, treat yourself to an exfoliating and hydrating all-body treatment to ensure your skin is primed to look its best on your holiday. A full body exfoliation like Finishing Touch by Revision Skincare not only leaves skin silky smooth, but the all-over deep moisture will promote a healthy texture and natural glow.

Cooking. Shopping. Parties. Travel. Family. Work. Kids. What does that spell?? Stress!! If just thinking about it makes you tired and cranky, consider ramping up the B vitamins this season. Weekly Vitamin B12 injections rev up the metabolism, increase energy, and keep your mood in check, making it a completely natural, healthy way to feel better, from the inside out.

Though time may heal all wounds, the leftover scars serve as ugly reminders to something we’d rather forget. Which makes the following news particularly appealing — Trinity Medical Pharmacy’s new, prescription-only, Scar Gel is the perfect fix for new and old scars alike. Not only does this custom-compounded topical treatment reduce the appearance of scars, including those pesky hypertrophic or keloid scars, but it virtually eliminates them all together.

The secret to a younger, sexier, more kissable lip?? Fillers such as Restylane, Juvederm and Silikon 1000 provide temporary or permanent lip enhancement solutions. Each has its own pros and cons, so be sure to discuss your options with a medical professional.

If losing weight during the holidays sounds like the impossible dream, think again! Now may just be the perfect time to jump start those New Years’ Resolutions. Why? Because studies show that the most significant weight loss occurs in the first month of any new program. So… start today and lose 10 pounds before Hannukah, or 20 pounds before Christmas. Increased confidence and a shapelier waist? That’s the perfect gift to give yourself.

A New Fix For Scars

If you’re like most, you have a few battle scars: lifelong reminders of that time you crashed into a wall trying a wheelie, emer-gency appendectomy, Olympic dream-killer knee surgery and let’s not forget the time you were showing off your knife skills during a dinner party. Not nearly as exciting are the acne cysts, pockmarks, skin discoloration and sun-damage you’ve accrued over the years, as well.

Here’s the deal: Our skin is a tough, but supple three-layer membrane: the epidermis, the dermis and the hypodermis. When injured, skin repairs itself by increasing the production of collagen—a protein vital to skin’s strength and ability to repair. Normal production of collagen is what keeps our skin alive, youthful and glowing. However, in reaction to an injury, collagen production goes into overdrive, creating an abundance of fibrous collagen growth that will knit together “broken” skin patches like cuts and abrasions. Think of it like scaffolding that lets builders repair a wall. With the exception of very minor lesions, like paper cuts, every wound results in some de- gree of scarring. Once scar tissue develops and enough time has passed, a scar usually fades a good deal on its own. For those that remain — dented, raised, flat, red or bulky — here are a few options for scar treatment, whether it be scar removal, scar reduction and overall skin rejuvenation tampa

Fraxel Laser Tampa. Nonablative lasers, like Fraxel, are approved by the FDA to treat acne and sur- gery-related scars. It works by using microscopic laser light to target specific areas below the skin’s surface, stimulating a natural healing process below the skin, jump-starting collagen produc- tion and allowing new skin to emerge. You’ll get dramatic results with little to no downtime, and repeated will significantly lessen the appearance of scars on the face or body.

Chemical Peels. Not quite ready for a laser? Consider Vi Peel. Gentle, yet powerful, the Vi Peel com-bines the power of chemical peel and the nourishment from many vitamins to combat the most troublesome skin conditions, including acne and injury scars, fine lines, wrinkles, sun-damage and hyperpigmentation, even melasma. It will also shrink enlarged pores and promote collagen and elastin production of the skin, resulting in tighter, more supple skin. The results are quick and impressive, with significant improvement visible after one treatment.

The ViPeel is suitable for any and all skin types and color. This extraordinary skin rejuvenation peel has shown excellent results on African-American pa-tients, on patients of Asian or Latin descent, and those with darker olive skin. At last, patients of all ethnicities can enjoy the benefits of a chemical peel.

Scar Gels. Whether your concern is an old scar or fear that a new one will heal badly, Trinity Medical Pharmacy’s Custom Scar Gel addresses the size, color, texture and itching that may come with what’s left of a wound. First, it takes the long- utilized medical use of silicone gel sheets and puts it into an easy-to-use formula that’s safe for all skin types. Then it's infused with a steroid, antihistamine and topical anesthetic plus Pracaxi oil (Pracasil- Plus), an organic compound rich with antioxidant, antibacterial and antifungal properties known to treat skin spots, severe acne, scars, psoriasis, and rosacea. Especially ideal for preventing abnormal scars like hypertrophic and keloid, Trinity’s Custom Scar Gel creates a breathable layer of softening hydration and protection, working to correct an imbalance of growth factors that leads to irregularities like hypertrophic and keloid scars.

A Shot At Happiness

I want to be happy.

Instinctually, we all come hard-wired with this "pursuit of happiness" inclination, and yet the feeling is so darn elusive. Oftentimes, it seems that the busy-ness of life thwarts our most innate desire at every turn. It’s such an important social topic that Time Magazine devoted an entire issue to the subject last June. Gretchen Rubin’s The Happiness Project started as a book, but has become a 21st Century lifestyle manifesto. And the term “finding happiness” returns 99 million Google results.

Which begs the question; if you had a shot at happiness — literally, an injection — would you take it?

It’s called facial feedback and the premise is simple: The expressions we make on our face are connected to the emotions we feel. If you smile broadly, you WILL feel happier at that moment. In fact, you need your smile to help you feel the emotion. Conversely, the act of frowning will negatively impact your thinking, coloring your outlook accordingly. By paralyzing the facial muscles used for frowning, Botox prevents people from physically displaying expressions of negative emotion which, in turn, makes them feel happier. The science itself is fascinating, and the evidence supporting Botox for happiness seems to be mounting. A variety of seemingly definitive studies are explored in a new book called The Faces of Emotion by Dr. Eric Finzi, who suggests that the link between Botox and depression is an important one:

Triggering more than a simple confidence boost, Botox not only has the potential to bring relief to patients suffering from depression or anger issues, but to spur long-term happiness.

As it turns out, Botox isn’t the only injectable mood enhancer. For those on the fence about Botulinum toxin, there’s a more natural alternative to consider — Vitamin B12.

According to The Idiot’s Guide to Vitamins & Minerals: Depression is one of the earliest symptoms for anyone low on B vitamins. In fact, studies show that at least one in four of all people hospitalized for depression are deficient in B-6 and B-12. But depression isn’t the only issue. You may even need extra B’s if you are chronically stressed, drink coffee or alcohol regularly, smoke, are on a diet, or are over 60 — which helps explain why B-deficiencies are rampant in our modern “microwave” society (40%, according to Tufts University)!

Weekly or monthly injections of Vitamin B12, which contain B12 and all the B-complex vitamins, help synthesize the “feel good” neurotransmitters dopamine, serotonin and epinephrine, stabilizing and improving mood, energy, sleep, appetite, motivation, movement, cognition and numerous other brain functions. Plus, it’s also great for the skin. After feeling the positive effects of a B12 injection, getting them on a regular basis may be just the boost your mind and body needs. It’s a simple shot in the arm to feeling happy, healthier, and stronger.

Considering hCG for Weight Loss?

Human chorionic gonadotropin, otherwise known as hCG, is not a new concept in the world of medical weight loss.  In fact, it was in the 1950s that obesity researcher Dr. Albert T.W. Simeons first published his research, Pounds and Inches, describing the efficacy of hCG as a weight loss supplement when paired with a restrictive (500 calorie!) diet*. According to Simeons, the effectiveness of hCG as a diet supplement is its role in “re-setting” the hypothalamus and changing how the body burns fat. In his research Simeons wrote that there are three types of fat in the body: structural fat, the fat that fills gaps to create protection around organs and bones; reserve fat, the fat used by the body as nutritional income, fuel for muscles and body temperature regulation; and “abnormal” fat, which should be available for nutritional reserves, but is actually trapped. Simeons' research found that hCG unlocked the body’s ability to burn this trapped fat. Dieters who supplemented hCG with a 500-calorie diet felt no hunger pains because their body lived off the calories from the trapped fat. The down side? It is only advisable to participate in this stage of the diet for 21 to 40 days.

So... is hCG an effective stepping stone for healthy weight management? For many, yes, as long as it's carefully distributed and monitored under the care of a physician, and patients are guided back into a healthy eating and daily exercise lifestyle. However, because hCG has not been approved by the FDA for use as a weight loss drug – it was developed to treat infertility in women – the FTC has enforced strict regulations on advertising and distribution. When considering weight loss solutions, be sure to consult a highly-trained medical weight loss tampa doctor or your primary care physician.

When it comes to weight loss, hCG might just be the game changer you've been looking for!

Hand Rejuvenation-The Finishing Touch

You wear sunscreen. You’re diligent about monthly facials. Frown lines? What frown lines?! In the battle against aging, you take advantage of the amazing surgical and non-surgical facial treatments available and you have the youthful glow to prove it. But it’s not your crow’s feet giving away you true age. It’s your hands! Sound familiar? Hands are the most telltale signs of aging, yet we neglect them and, well... it’s showing.

Because hands are rarely covered and receive more exposure to harsh environmental elements and the damaging rays of the sun, they usually age more rapidly than other parts of the body. Skin becomes thinner as we age. Loss of fatty tissue, less oil in the skin, and sometimes less flexibility over time, leaves the hands looking shrunken, wrinkled, boney, veined, and discolored with age spots. Not a good look with your ageless face!

Here’s the good news: Many of the same procedures used so effectively on the face work wonders on the hands as well. Hand rejuvenation procedures add fullness to boney hands, lighten or remove age spots, and firm up crepe-like skin, leaving hands younger, smoother, and more attractive.

hand-rejuvenation-1Hand rejuvenation can be accomplished in a number of ways. Microdermabrasion is a painless, skin resurfacing that helps eliminate fine lines, and hyperpigmention, while stimulating new cell growth and collagen production. Chemical peels remove irregular pigmentation from sun damage, resulting in smoother, evenly toned, retextured skin.  Absolutely amazing outcomes are achieved with laser resurfacing. Lasers target and remove damaged skin in a precise manner, layer by layer. Fraxel Laser, in particular, penetrates 3-5 times deeper than standard lasers, stimulating newer, smoother, firmer skin to form.

hand rejuvenatino-3Even the prominent hand veins that accompany advancing age can be eliminated with little or no downtime, as well. Sclerotherapy, the technique used to remove unsightly leg veins, may also be used to remove hand veins. With sclerotherapy, saline is injected into the vein, lightening the color of the vein and causing it to shrink and eventually fade. And last but not least, injectable dermal fillers (like Juvederm and Radiesse Tampa) work like magic erasers, reversing the signs of aging by adding volume to aging hands and hydrating the skin, making hands appear more plump and youthful. Best of all, results are immediately visible.

hand rejuvenation-2Typically, a variety of techniques is most successful in turning back the "hands of time". No matter which combination of hand rejuvenation treatments you choose, you will want to continue to protect your hands from future damage with regular use of sun protection.  Consistent use of sunscreen significantly prolongs your improvement! Next to your face, your hands are the most visible part of your body. So, go ahead — add fullness to boney hands, remove unsightly veins, eradicate age spots, and thicken skin. Your younger, smoother, and more beautiful hands will complete an otherwise youthful appearance and keep those ageists guessing!

Modern Microdermabrasion

Did you know that microdermabrasion dates back to ancient Egypt when doctors used sandpaper to scrape the outermost layer of the skin to get rid of unwanted scars and signs of old wounds? If it’s good enough for Cleopatra, it’s good enough for us!

Kidding aside, we tend to forget that skin is the largest organ in the human body eliminating almost 10% of the body’s toxins. Unfortunately, the vitamins and nutrients needed to replenish our skin are oftentimes used up by other organs, leaving skin dull, dehydrated, sallow and vulnerable to wrinkles, sun damage, scars and blemishes.

In the battle against aging, regular microdermabrasion is key for keeping skin in tip-top shape. Officially developed in Italy, in 1985, microdermabrasion is a quick, safe process which promotes the production of new skin cells in the deepest layer of the dermis by “sandblasting” the top layer of skin. Simple, painless and non-invasive, microdermabrasion is remarkably effective at diminishing fine lines, age spots, wrinkles, acne, shallow skin scars, as well as hyper pigmentation and sun damage. Similar to brushing one’s teeth, microdermabrasion helps remove skin “plaque” and dead skin cells, aiding the penetration of skin care products (creams, serums and medications) by up to 10-50 percent. Patients typically note even makeup goes on more easily after microdermabrasion.

There are two primary types of microdermabrasion. Crystal microdermabrasion utilizes a compressor that draws in air through a hand-held wand. When the wand touches the skin, a vacuum is created. Very tiny crystals -- like aluminum oxide, sodium chloride or sodium bicarbonate -- blast across the skin’s surface, removing dead skin cells. Diamond microdermabrasion, on the other hand, uses a single, diamond-tipped wand rather than a stream of particles, giving it the flexibility to be used near the eyes or around the mouth. The wands are of varied size and coarseness for different skin types and depths of resurfacing, making it a more efficient tool in advanced anti-aging skincare.

No matter which method you choose, after one 30 minute treatment, there is a visibly healthy glow and marked improvement in the appearance of fine lines and skin texture. With repeated microdermabrasion treatments, benefits expand to include further wrinkle reduction, increased collagen production and notable repair to sun-damaged skin, acne and resultant scarring, enlarged pores, age spots and pigmentation. Microdermabrasion is most commonly used on the face, but it’s safe for all areas of the body, including back, neck and hands. Best of all, it works well for all skin types and ethnicities.

One last note: While microdermabrasion can achieve dramatic results, a great deal is dependent on the expertise of the professional administering the procedure. Be certain your aesthetician is a fully-qualified, licensed professional who has been certified for microdermabrasion. As such, it’s best to follow the recommendations of your aesthetician regarding the number of treatments necessary for optimum results. Skin type and condition is considered in making a determination. And, remember to avoid sun for several days after treatment and protect yourself with sunscreen… your skin will thank you!

Favorite Part of Owning the Business?

“The patients, by far, are my favorite part of owning Lecada Medical Artistry. It may sound trite to say, “They’re like family”--- but, it’s true! Always delivering what we’ve promised, has in turn, rewarded us with extraordinary patient loyalty. They really have become family and it’s gratifying to see the changes they achieve outwardly and inwardly. Their success is truly our success.”

Who Do You Owe Your Success To?

“I was fortunate to be raised in a close-knit family where I was encouraged to discover my own, unique strengths and gifts. Along with a ferocious work ethic, my mother instilled my sister and me with a profound confidence that we could achieve anything we set out to do. She would not accept excuses for imagined roadblocks or limitations, always encouraging us to aim high, and strive for excellence. That relentless striving, tenacity, and determination remains with me to this day. Further advancing my success is the benefit of having an amazing husband, Jay, who has helped me realize my dream with unconditional support and encouragement.”

With summer approaching, the desire to get beach body ready is impossible to ignore. While we always suggest starting off with a healthy diet and the right amount of exercise, when that combo isn't enough, there’s always Exilis Tampa for targeted skin tightening, body shaping and fat reduction.

Exilis was the winner of best skin tightening device in 2012 at THE Aesthetic Show, Las Vegas, NV, and has been featured on numerous television programs such as "The View" and "The Doctors".

Exilis uses focused radio frequency (RF) to tighten skin. Thermage is another well-known skin tightening device using RF. What's the difference? Well... Thermage is extremely painful and Exilis feels more like a hot stone massage. The pain of Thermage may also limit how high the settings can be, which may limit or diminish results. With Exilis, there is no pain and no downtime. Exilis does require several sessions for a complete treatment, usually 4-6 about a week apart. Each session lasts 20 min to 1 hour depending on how many areas are being treated at each session. The downside with ANY energy based skin tightening device is that the patient must wait for their own collagen to grow and remodel to see the results. Excited about starting to look younger, the wait can be as frustrating as watching grass grow. But in just three months, a visible change does occur and results continue to improve even beyond this. It's as if the patient is aging backwards as the device actually causes some changes within the skin that are opposite of what occurs with the aging process.

Exilis can not only be used on the face to firm, smooth, and tighten the skin, but it can also be used on the body to address those areas that no amount of working out and dieting will fix. The body hand-piece of the Exilis device not only tightens skin, but also shrinks fatty deposits and allows a very nice non-surgical body contouring. There is no downtime and no pain with Exilis body contouring either. Many patients actually fall asleep during the treatments. Patient satisfaction with Exilis is very high. The body sculpting results become visible much more quickly than the skin tightening, with patients frequently reporting visible changes in the first week. Also, since the fat deposits are being reduced over several sessions though gentle heating, there is no risk of contour irregularity, lumps, gouges, or dimples as can sometimes be seen with poor results in surgical recontouring. There is no garment to wear and no bruising or drainage or potential for infection. The fat just seems to gradually melt away in the areas treated, without any slow down in your activities except for the relaxation during the treatment itself.
