Have you ever noticed a thin blue, violet or red webbing pattern on your skin? Those are spider veins. They are most commonly found on the legs, but they can be found elsewhere, such as on the face. They’re often thought to be caused by a variety of reasons including weak veins, poor circulation, pregnancy, age, hormonal changes, heredity, and obesity.
While spider veins usually don’t cause physical problems, they can be emotionally distressing as people often feel that they look unattractive. Thankfully, spider veins can be easily treated with sclerotherapy, which has been in use for over 150 years. Sclerotherapy involves a specialist injecting your veins with a chemical called sclerant. This chemical causes the spider veins’ lining to become inflamed, harden, and eventually dissolve. The sclerotherapy treatment tends to take between 15 to 30 minutes, and is relatively painless, especially when performed by a skilled doctor.
Treating spider veins with sclerotherapy is relatively pain-free and virtually non-invasive. After the procedure, your doctor may recommend an over the counter pain medication for any discomfort you experience. Compression stockings or bandages can also aid in your aftercare. You may experience itching, mild bruising or swelling after the procedure, but it will pass quickly. There are virtually no side effects from sclerotherapy.
Depending on the size, number, and depth of the spider veins being treated, you may need one or more visits with a physician. Many patients are happy with the results of their sclerotherapy after just one treatment. If you decide you need more than one visit, you should plan to have your follow up treatment at least four weeks after your initial treatment. This will let your body heal up so you can accurately gauge the results of the first visit.
